A Future Worth Building
Australia was once the beacon of properity that lit the whole region. We can be that nation again. Australia can eliminate its trillion‑dollar federal debt and build a multi‑trillion‑dollar Commonwealth Fund within 20 years — not through ideology, but through national capability, national unity, and national purpose.
Our vision is to leverage pre-committment of expenses in infrastructure, defence and civic sustainment to increase the capacity, size, and sophistication of our economy. We create ongoing demand to build ships, satellites, energy systems, fibre, rail, ports, and advanced manufacturing — here in Australia. We stop sending billions overseas to buy things we need to build here. We grow the tax base. We retire national debt. We save the surplus. We build the Commonwealth Fund. We lift our region with us.
With federal debt eliminated we can start a national endowment, that we call, "The Commonwealth Fund" that grows year after year, decade after decade. A nation with zero debt and a multi‑trillion‑dollar fund is a nation free to choose its future and will be the envy of others and a beacon of prosperity to the region. The Commonwealth Fund will quickly grow to dwarf the future fund established more than 20 years ago.
We build here what we once bought overseas — corvettes, UCAVs, satellites, launch sites, fibre networks, energy systems, rail, ports, sovereign vehicles, and sovereign communications. This is how prosperity is built.
A prosperous region is a peaceful region. Australia rises by lifting our neighbours. Through shared capability — ships, satellites, fibre, energy systems, and sovereign industry — we strengthen stability, opportunity, and long‑term peace across the Pacific and Southeast Asia.
Adam Smith, in Wealth of Nations, showed that a nation can build wealth - beyond the accumulation of gold and silver - through a few key principles. Keep governments limited in what they do - focus on administration of laws and justice and civil peace - attend to defence of the nation, and its interests - attend to matters that individual cannot reasonably do themselves, such as infrastructure and education. Have governments only as much as is needed to help the markets and captial create wealth. Markets will naturally create trade with others where there is advantage, and build relationships beyond the borders. A wealthy society will naturally have need for, what Smith called non-productive labour - but what we would call services. Smith noted the productive and service labout must be maintained in a balance - not too little of one, nor too little of the other. Of course, this is just a sketch of Smith's work but it has been true for centuries that the right balance in an econommy will create a prosperous, secure and healthy society.
Smith knew trade was vital but it was the great maritime strategist Alfred Thayer Mahan, whose work articulated that a country can only be prosperous when its sea lines of communication can be maintained. And further, that this needed a freely mobile merchant fleet and a protective navy - both of which need a robust, resiliant, and adaptable economy behind them - Mahan meets Smith to keep the ships moving freely and the benefits of trade flowing. Smith and Mahan together provide a serious anchor for thinking about enduring prosperity.
